Real Christmas trees all share that fresh pine smell and festive magic, but the two varieties Australians ask about most, the Radiata Pine and the Douglas Fir, are quite different trees. If you are weighing them up for your lounge room this year, here is an honest side by side look.

Shape and look

The Radiata Pine is the classic storybook Christmas tree: dense, full and deep green, with that familiar conical shape that looks right at home under a pile of presents. The Douglas Fir is a softer, more relaxed looking tree. Its branches grow in gentler layers with slightly blue-green needles, which gives it a natural, just-out-of-the-forest feel.

Scent

Both smell wonderful, just differently. The Radiata Pine has a mild, pleasant pine scent that fills a room without overwhelming it. The Douglas Fir is famous for a sweeter fragrance, almost citrusy, that really releases when you brush past its branches. If a strong Christmas smell is the whole point for you, the Douglas Fir has the edge.

Needles and freshness

Here is the thing most comparison guides skip: how long a tree stays fresh has less to do with the variety and more to do with how fresh it was cut and how well you water it. Any real tree in Queensland heat needs a stand with a big water reservoir and a daily top-up. Get those two things right and either variety will hold its needles beautifully through December. Our tree care page has the full rundown.

Decorating

This is where the trees genuinely differ. The Radiata Pine has sturdy, upward-reaching branches that happily hold heavy baubles, big ornaments and strings of lights. The Douglas Fir has softer, more flexible branches and very soft needles, which makes it gentle on little hands, but it suits lighter decorations best. Families with toddlers often love the soft needles; ornament collectors tend to prefer the Radiata's muscle.

So which one should you pick?

Choose a Radiata Pine if you want the full, classic Christmas tree shape, strong branches for a serious ornament collection, and a mild pine scent. Choose a Douglas Fir if fragrance is your top priority and you prefer a softer, more natural looking tree with lighter decorations.
